#3 Back on the Stage- Soul Song

Hi buddy

So a few month’s ago, after graduation, I decided to get back into something that I hadn’t done in a while. I decided to join a choir again. Thinking back on it, singing in groups be it Men’s chorus, barbershop, or a full blown choir ensemble, had been a big part of my life throughout my days in high school but life kind of got in the way with university and stuff. With all that stuff now out of the way, it was a chance for me to get back to doing what I really loved- singing in groups.

So I joined a local choir in Cairns called Soul Song and have not been any happier. The lead conductor, Jackie Larson is a fricken legend! She is one of the hardest working people I have ever met and I swear she can make a toad believe it is Pavarotti! It has been a whopping adventure these last couple of weeks and with people like Jackie guiding us, it has been a phenomenal adventure. Plus the people at Soul Song are absolute legends! I think all the best people in Cairns just decided to turn up one day and sing together, because the Soul Singers are some of the funniest people I have ever met.

On Saturday 21st March, we had a concert at the Old Choral Society. The sold out crowd turned up and for the first time in a long long time, I felt that great rush of exhilaration every performer get’s just before they give the crowd their all. Weeks of preparation (and not letting anyone else ride in the car with me because I’d be singing) was finally going to pay off. As an aside, it was extra special for me because my parents were there to watch. I had been in boarding school in New Zealand where I started singing in choirs and my parents missed that whole part of my life. It was good to show them something I really enjoyed.

My take home message, I’d like to think that we all go back to try something that we did in the past that gave us a guilt-free feeling of accomplishment when we were younger. Don’t get me wrong, I do not live in the past. It is foolish to say the past was better. I merely enjoyed something then that I wanted to try again and found that the glove still fit. If you used to enjoy making music, playing hockey, writing, or reading, can I encourage you to try it again. You may just enjoy it.

#2 Designing Big for a small Cairns

So this Thursday 26th May, I am going to be part of a panel discussing the future of Designing in Cairns. The panel is made up of several emerging thinkers in their particular fields of civil engineering design, architecture, marketing, property investment, public art policy and my 2 cents in urban planning. The event is part of a lecture series held on the last Thursday of each month, organised by the Architects Institute of AustraliaFNQ regional branch titled “Designed in Cairns”. A recent piece written in the new News reel in town called “Tropic Now” gives a good summary of the event.

Having met up with the participants and shot ideas around, I am pleased to say that, at the very least you will learn something, or will end up appreciating a new perspective on an old topic. Hope you can join us for what should be an insightful discussion.
